I am exaggerating 0.0% when I say there is nothing I enjoy watching more than women behaving badly on the big screen. Whether it’s my fearless Real Housewives slinging insults faster than my Gen-Z bestie cashier at Trader Joes or a female assassin from Russia that kills arms dealers in couture, I support all women’s rights. Especially the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of unhinged-ness. Enter: Sharon Horgan’s mystery masterpiece, Bad Sisters. If you were thinking about getting into the show here’s a quick overview. Grace Garvey is married to a major prick, so much so that her four sisters Becka, Eva, Ursula and Bibi call him just that, “The Prick.” But eventually John Paul’s ass-hattery grows so gargantuan the sisters can’t take it any more for themselves or Grace’s daughter Blánaid. They decide they have to get rid of The Prick for good. If you don’t want spoilers stop reading here!
Now that season 2 has finally arrived, I can’t wait to follow the Garvey girls back to Dublin. But for those who binged the Irish mystery a while ago, you may now be fuzzy on the hairy details of how JP ended up d-e-a-d. Here’s a guide to the Bad Sisters season 1 secrets and plotlines to know before you dive into season 2.
Whose idea was it to kill John Paul in Bad Sisters?
Bibi Garvey (the sister who makes wearing an eyepatch an everyday slay) first decided they should kill The Prick after the girls drunkenly joke about it at Christmas drinks. Bibi had long hated JP for being the reason she lost her eye. Bibi brings the idea to Eva, who gets on board when JP ridicules her for her infertility, tries to separate Eva from her niece, and starts making moves to steal Eva’s promotion. Eventually Ursula and Becka join the plan when JP goes out of his way to make their lives hell by exposing Ursula’s affair and going back on a promise to loan Becka money to start her own massage business.
Why did the insurance company suspect the bad sisters killed John Paul in the first place?
The insurance company investigating the Garveys, Clafflin and Sons, is broke. Matt and Tom are left to run the failing business after their father died by suicide. The senior Clafflin left a note explaining how he had stolen his client’s policy money for years, so in order the save the family business, the Clafflins have to find a way to not pay out John Paul’s insurance claim. Thus, they need to find a way to prove his death was not accidental, so they start asking questions.
Which Garvey sister killed John Paul in Bad Sisters?
In a major twist, quiet, soft Grace killed her own husband. This was after months of her sisters trying and failing to off JP in elaborate sabotage traps he kept accidentally escaping (the dog ate his poisoned dinner, the went outside to make a phone call when they exploded his cabin, you know, the usual). But after abusing Grace emotionally and sometimes physically for years, she finally snapped all on her own. Her neighbor Roger helped her cover it up after the fact.
Who killed John Paul’s father?
The secondary mystery storyline of what happened to JP’s father was revealed with a disturbing flashback. George had “disappeared” without explanation, leaving his mother Minna, who had dimentia, essentially widowed. It turned out no one killed JP’s dad, he died from choking an eyeball from his taxidermy kit. But JP saw the accident happen and mercilessly let him croak. After putting his dad in the walk-in freezer, The Prick threw George’s body in the pond in a suitcase so he would never be found and he could continue spending his money.
How does Minna die?
Minna accidentally dies in one of the sister’s schemes to kill JP. They had rigged the door in the walk-in freezer to trap him, but his mother, Minna got to it first.
Do Becka and Matt break up at the end of Bad Sisters?
Becka and Matt are still TBD after the season 1 finale. They started out in a tough situation, as they started dating before he realized she was a Garvey sister. After they both realize she is a part of his investigation, things get complicated (and steamy). At the end of season 1, Matt confronts Becka with evidence about what Grace did to JP. Becka shares the full picture of who The Prick was, which softens Matt to the sisters’ shitty situation. After Matt decides to burn the evidence, it seems there could be a future to explore between the two. But the final episode doesn’t make it clear what will happen next.
Do the Bad Sisters get caught at the end of season 1?
Of course not, silly! That’s how we got to season 2. Grace decides to give up the insurance claim after speaking to Matt, who had discovered enough evidence to turn Grace in but decided against it because of his feelings for Becka. This frees the brothers of having to give the major payout and from having to take responsibility for continuing their father’s fraudulent business.
