Everything We Know About The Alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooter, Luigi Mangione

Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. On December 9, five days after the shooting took place in New York City, Luigi was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania and taken into police custody. He was found in possession of a “ghost gun” (an untraceable firearm) and a manifesto that offers insight into his motive. Luigi was also carrying several fake IDs and a U.S. passport at the time.

Where Did Luigi Mangione Go To College?

Luigi was the valedictorian at the Baltimore private high school, Gilman School, before he attended The University of Pennsylvania. There, he studied computer science and artificial intelligence and founded Penn’s Game Research and Development Environment in 2016. According to the student newspaper, the Daily Pennsylvanian, the game development club aimed to “foster creative expression and cultivate career skills for the artists, programmers, and creatives interested in game development in the Penn community.” Luigi graduated in 2020 with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science, per his LinkedIn page.

He was a data engineer at TrueCar from November 2020 to 2023. (Luigi’s LinkedIn says he’s still working there now, but a spokesperson for the company revealed that he hasn’t worked there since 2023.)

What Was Luigi Mangione’s Motive?

According to the New York Times, Luigi was found with a handwritten document on him that expressed “ill will” toward corporate America. It reportedly said “These parasites had it coming” and “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.” Investigators have also shared that the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” were written on shell casings found at the crime scene.

Was Luigi Mangione Charged?

On December 9, Luigi was charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, per CNN.

Luigi Mangione’s Family’s Reaction

NBC News obtained a statement from Luigi’s family: “Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione,” the statement reads. “We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
