After an eight-year Lena Dunham show drought, we are so back! The woman, the myth, the legend who brought us Girls is returning to the small screen with Too Much, another hilarious tale about a messy brunette navigating her career and relationships in a big city. Except this time around, the main character is an American expat in London. “I have wanted to make a romantic comedy about what happens when a loud, messy, complicated Jewess descends on a city of deeply repressed people,” Lena explained at Tribeca. The new series is partially inspired by her own life — she met and married her husband and Too Much co-creator, Luis Felber, in the U.K., where she’s been living for the past few years.
According to the official synopsis, Jessica (played by Megan Stalter) is a “New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship.” She accepts a job offer in London, intending to embrace solitude “like a Brontë sister,” but everything changes when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe). The show is billed as “an ex-pat rom-com for the disillusioned who wonder if true love is still possible, but sincerely hope that it is.” So basically, Lena made it for me.
With a legendary creator, a juicy premise, and this INSANE cast, Too Much is a recipe for success. This is one of the most stacked cast lists I’ve seen in years… We got folks from The White Lotus, Sleepless in Seattle, Girls (duh), and there are a few iconic supermodels, too. Here’s where you’ve seen the Too Much cast before.
Too Much Cast: Where You Know Them From, Celeb Cameos
Meg Stalter
I’m so ready for this queen to have her main character moment as Jessica. You probably recognize Meg from Hacks (she played assistant-turned talent manager Kayla) or her webseries, The Megan Stalter Show.
Will Sharpe
You know this icon from the best season of television ever made — The White Lotus season 2, of course. He played Aubrey Plaza’s newly rich husband, Ethan, and now, he’s playing Jessica’s love interest, Felix.
Michael Zegen
Yes, you do recognize that face! You saw Michael in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (he played Joel), or perhaps you know him as Benji in Frances Ha. In Too Much, he plays Zev, Jessica’s ex-partner of seven years.
Rita Wilson
Girl, I sincerely hope you recognize the only and only Rita Wilson, aka Suzy in Sleepless in Seattle. She plays Jessica’s mother, Lois, in Too Much.
Jessica Alba
Miss Jessica Alba (Dark Angel, Fantastic Four) makes a surprise cameo, playing one of the clients at the ad agency Jessica works for.
Richard E. Grant
If you’ve seen Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Withnail and I, or Gosford Park, that’s why you recognize Richard! In Too Much, he plays Jonno, Jessica’s boss at a high-end ad firm.
Naomi Watts
Oscar-nominated Naomi Watts is blessing our screens as Jonno’s wife, Ann, in Too Much. Obviously, she’s best known for Mulholland Drive and King Kong.
Janicza Bravo
You might recognize Janicza (who plays Jessica’s co-worker and fellow expat, Kim, in Too Much) from the 2020 black comedy crime film, Zola.
Rhea Perlman
Yes, you know Rhea from Barbie! She played Barbie creator Ruth Handler, and in Too Much, she plays Jessica’s grandmother, Dottie.
Andrew Rannells
Thank GOD Andrew from Girls shows up in Too Much. In this show, his name is Jameson, and he’s experimenting with polyamory in a communal space in Bushwick. Naturally.
Emily Ratajkowski
I know EmRata as the love of my life, and you know her as a supermodel. She plays Zev’s new fiancée, Wendy, in Too Much, and she’s also appeared in We Are Your Friends, Gone Girl, and Entourage.
Adwoa Aboah
Adwoa (Linnea in Too Much) is also the love of my life and also a supermodel. Her acting resume includes Ghost in the Shell, Satisfaction, and To Get Her.
Lena Dunham
IDK, man. I honestly have no clue who Lena is or where you’d know her from. Kidding, of course. That’s Miss Hannah Horvath herself <3.
