Why You Should Still File Your Taxes Now

Presented by TurboTax

Well, it’s that time of year again. Despite everything going on in the world right now, you still need to think about your taxes. Whether you’re a first-time taxpayer or you just procrastinate it every year, it’s easy to put off your taxes until the very last minute. But even if you know literally nothing about finance, you don’t need to panic (or call your dad), because TurboTax has it handled.

By now, you’ve probably heard that the federal deadline for filing your taxes has been pushed back to July 15th. For many of us, the best time to do our taxes is still right now.

The biggest reason to file right now? Money! If you’re eligible for a refund on your taxes for 2019, there’s literally no reason you should wait to file. According to TurboTax, close to 72% of taxpayers received a tax refund of nearly $3,000 last tax season, and I’m assuming we could all use that money right now. With e-file and direct deposit, refunds are typically issued within three weeks of filing, so the sooner you file, the sooner you could get some extra cash to save or shop online. Amazing.

Another big reason to file now? Stimulus checks! If you’re eligible, you could get a COVID-19 stimulus check of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for joint taxpayers. The IRS will use your most recent tax return to determine the amount of your stimulus check. So go ahead and file that tax return! If you’re getting a refund, choose to receive it through direct deposit so the IRS can directly deposit your check instead of sending it via snail mail.

But whether you’re expecting a refund check, or you might owe money this year, it’s still a good idea to check it off your to-do list. Due to some unfortunate world circumstances, chances are you’ve found yourself with some extra free time right now. You’ve probably burned through like, seven shows by now, and that’s awesome. You might have even cleaned out your closet, organized the kitchen, or deep cleaned every surface in your apartment. That’s all great—now do your taxes.

TurboTax is the perfect way to get your taxes done easily and quickly, all from the comfort of your own home. If you’re a self-sufficient adult, you can do it all by yourself with TurboTax (I’m impressed). If you’re slightly less confident, you can use TurboTax Live to get personalized help from real CPAs, who can give you unlimited tax advice and answers, on demand. My personal favorite thing about TurboTax Live is that it uses one-way video—you can see the tax experts, but they can’t see you. Thank you, TurboTax, for allowing us to be competent adults without changing out of our pajamas. And of course, TurboTax gets you your biggest possible refund, because that’s why we’re all really here.

Basically, TurboTax can help you to get this sh*t done, and you won’t even have to call your parents for help. You know your dad will be impressed. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, but unlike music festivals getting postponed, getting your taxes done is one small thing you can actually be in control of. Plus, it won’t hurt if you get a nice refund check.
