Did Selena Gomez Shade Justin Bieber On The 'Wizards Of Waverly Place' Reboot?

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are both happily married now, but there was a time (nearly a decade) when ~Jelena~ was the talk of the town. The Only Murders in the Building star and the singer dated on and off from 2010 to 2018, and it was… intense, to say the least. They spoke about each other dramatically in interviews and documented their relationship ups and downs in vulnerable songs. In “Lose You to Love Me,” Selena seemingly accuses Justin of “replacing” her with Hailey Bieber two months after their split.

Of course, this is all ancient history now. But some fans are convinced Selena just referenced the drama in an episode of the Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. There’s a clip of the alleged reference making the rounds on X, and people have very strong opinions about it. Did Selena Gomez shade Justin Bieber on the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot? Or are fans just unwell and obsessing over drama that doesn’t really exist?

Why Fans Think Selena Gomez Referenced Justin Bieber On The Wizards Reboot

Let’s discuss the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place scene that’s causing so much controversy right now. In the clip circulating on X, Selena’s character, Alex Russo, is talking to her daughter, Billie, about heartbreak. “And if you really like this guy, you should follow your heart,” Alex tells Billie.

She then adds: “As someone whose type is bad boys you think you can fix but you can’t, so you end up writings songs about them… I know what I’m talking about.”

Yeah, it’s not shocking that a lot of fans interpreted that line as a reference to Selena’s life rather than Alex’s life. As mentioned earlier, Selena’s (allegedly) written several songs about her relationship with Justin, who could certainly be described as a former “bad boy.” And I don’t immediately associate Alex Russo with songwriting. The writers probably did intend that not-so-subtle nod to Selena’s life and career.

However, the line does technically make sense for Alex’s character. “Mind you she literally had bad boys exes in the show, and she was in a band,” a fan pointed out on X. (It’s true… Alex has plenty of sus exes, and she and Justin do form a pop-rock band in the original Wizards.)

Another fan agreed, adding, “This is Alex Russo this isn’t Selena Gomez yall need to let it go Alex got something like 4 ‘bad boy’ exes in the show and there are episodes where she sings and writes songs bc she’s in a band with Justin Russo.”

Unfortunately, the haters out there are now mocking Selena for “obsessing” over Justin or “dissing” him. Reminder: Selena didn’t write the script, and it simply isn’t that serious. Leave her alone and enjoy the show!
