Make Way For Lord And Lady Beckham: David Beckham Is Being Knighted

One thing the British Royals and the Beckhams have in common is a love for their country. I kid, of course, although both the Beckhams and King Charles seem to have each been fighting with their respective kids quite a bit lately. But, at least they can all bond over at Buckingham Palace and celebrate the fact that David Beckham is going to be knighted.

That’s right, soccer star and Posh Spice’s husband David Beckham is finally receiving knighthood from the British monarchy. Getting knighted is one of the highest honors in Great Britain, and Becks has earned it thanks to his illustrious career in soccer, many charitable efforts, and other “contributions to British society.” Now, King Charles is including David in his Birthday Honors this year and granting him a knighthood, along with a number of other notable Brits.

David’s knighthood is actually a long time coming. In 2003, David received an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) honor, and he was originally nominated for knighthood in 2011. Fast forward almost 15 years, and now David is finally going to actually be a knight. Here’s what to know about David Beckham getting knighted by King Charles, including his and Victoria’s new titles.

In the past, knighthood was awarded to military vets (think knights on horseback and all that King Arthur stuff), but today, “they also recognize significant contributions to national life,” according to the British Monarchy website. “Recipients range from actors to scientists and from school head teachers to industrialists.”

After someone becomes a knight, they’re called “Sir,” like Sir Elton John or Sir Paul McCartney. The female equivalent is Damehood, like Dame Helen Mirren. So once David becomes a knight, he’ll officially be known as Sir David Beckham. That doesn’t make Victoria a Dame, though. As the wife of a knight, Victoria will receive the title of Lady Beckham. I feel like the idea of Lady Victoria Beckham is the perfect set-up for some Spice Girls/Bridgerton crossover, but I’ll leave that up to the professionals.

David spends a lot of time with King Charles, and he was recently named an ambassador for The King’s Foundation in 2024. He works on educational and health programs through the charity and works closely with the King on those projects. So, it makes sense that Charles is now taking their relationship to the next level by making David a knight.
