Tennis champion Serena Williams is a pretty badass example of a successful woman. Throughout her long career, she’s had major success on the court while also fighting for equal compensation and visibility off the court. She and her sister Venus led the charge for equal prize money for female tennis players, and now Serena is back with a powerful open letter addressed to all women.
“So when the subject of equal pay comes up, it frustrates me because I know firsthand that I, like you, have done the same work and made the same sacrifices as our male counterparts. I would never want my daughter to be paid less than my son for the same work. Nor would you.”
Right on. Serena has a pretty strong case, considering she’s won more major titles than any other player, male or female. She also challenges the fact that people call her one of the “world’s greatest female athletes.”
“Do they say LeBron is one of the world’s best male athletes? Is Tiger? Federer? Why not? They are certainly not female. We should never let this go unchallenged. We should always be judged by our achievements, not by our gender.”
Okay, so Tiger Woods might be better known as one of the world’s biggest fuckboys these days, but Serena’s point comes across loud and clear. It’s bullshit that women can only be great “for a woman,” and not truly recognized for being fucking bosses.
At the end of the letter, Serena tells us that “we must continue to dream big,” so that future generations of girls and women can understand that their potential is limitless. We probably won’t be having kids for like, ten more years (fingers crossed), but we’re def bookmarking this so we can show our daughters someday. Thank you, Serena, now let’s go kick some ass this month.
