How to Build a Better Jell-O Shot

Laissez les bon temps rouller! If you don’t know what that means, a) you’ve never been to New Orleans and b) you clearly didn’t know that today is Mardi Gras. Bless.

In a showing of solidarity with our drunken friends on Bourbon Street, today we’re creating a better Jell-O shot – the best friend of betches everywhere who can’t take a straight shot of vodka without gagging a little. It’s okay.

  1. Get your combos right: If you’re just throwing plain vodka into whatever kind of Jell-O was leftover at the store, you’re going to have mediocre shots. Know that strawberry Jell-O works well with white rum; Midori; and tequila. Lemon Jell-O tastes good with Citron and tequila. Cherry Jell-O and Amaretto are delicious. Broaden your culinary horizons, betch.
  2. Don’t be fucking boring: Obviously, raspberry Jell-O with raspberry vodka will work, but it’s boring. Mix it up by putting things like Malibu with orange Jell-O or making a legit margarita complete with margarita mix, tequila, and lime Jell-O. You can even make a chocolate covered cherry shot with Magic Shell over the top.
  3. Things to avoid: Don’t try to use blue Jell-O in pretty much anything because it tastes like shit. Also, Bailey’s will curdle if mixed with any fruit Jell-O. Gross.
  4. Use these: Vodka and Peach Schnapps go with everything. Really. So if you’re trying to make Jell-O shots in a hurry, these are your best friends.

Armed with this new knowledge, here are two of our new favorite Jell-O shots:

Cherry Amaretto:


  • 3 oz. package cherry Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 oz. cold water
  • 6 oz. amaretto


Margarita Shot:


  • 3 oz. package lime Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 4 oz. tequila
  • 4 oz. margarita mix

For both shots, dissolve the Jell-O in the boiling water, then add the cold water and/or alcohol. Stir, pour into your shot cups, and let set. Once they’re ready, have a shot contest with all your friends. Yay!
