This week Disney PR tweeted that their nationwide casting search for High School Musical 4 had officially begun, and fans of the movie series lost their shit. The original HSM debuted a full ten years ago—when Zac Efron had hockey hair and hadn’t been to rehab yet—which was a simpler time that we’re all nostalgic about. The franchise has produced three movies so far, with the latest being High School Musical 3: Senior Year that came out in 2008.
In light of the new movie, we thought we’d revisit the original characters to see where they are now. They’re all around 24 years old at this point, and let’s just say a lot has changed since their days as Wildcats…
Within a week at Stangord, Gabriella realized dating Troy was a horrible mistake since all he wanted to do was FaceTime while she was attempting to join the best a cappella group at school, rush a sorority, and do homework for the first time (they didn?t have that at East High.) She broke up with him and now lives in a loft with three college roommates, is applying to med school and dating the heir to In-N-Out.
After getting dumped and cut from the Berkeley basketball team, Troy was crushed. He got over it pretty quickly once he joined a frat, became the president and discovered binge drinking. By the time graduation rolled around, Troy had slept with half the girls on campus and realized he was fucked for the real world, since his only ?talents? were sports and music, and that was only compared to 50 kids at a fake high school. He moved to San Francisco, took a job in finance and is looking forward to Yacht Week.
Once Troy left for Berkeley, Chad realized he had basically been forced to do musical theater for the past two years and was a much better athlete than his so-called ?best friend.? He took Troy?s spot on the University of Albuquerque basketball team and then was recruited to play on the LA Lakers. He?ll never forgive Troy and the rest of East High for almost sabotaging his career, and lives in a multi-million dollar mansion where he throws parties for models.
Sharpay immediately moved to LA after her high school graduation, where she?s currently pursuing her dream of becoming a singer. She posts YouTube covers everyday, has auditioned for The Voice over ten times and does a lot of cocaine. While Sharpay hopes her music career will take off, she already has 70,000 Instagram followers so she doesn?t really give a shit.
After winning the Juilliard scholarship at East High, Ryan moved to New York City where he currently resides in a massive Brooklyn apartment fully paid for by his parents. When he?s not auditioning for Off-Broadway shows, he?s exploring vegan restaurants in his neighborhood and his sexuality at the city?s hottest gay bars. The best day of his life was a week ago, when he finally got tickets to Hamilton.
Taylor McKessie never left home because the writers didn?t care enough to give her any kind of storyline whatsoever. She became a certified yoga instructor and spends her time reading Buzzfeed articles, binging on How to Get Away with Murder and reliving the glory days of when Gabriella, Troy and Chad would somewhat acknowledge her existence. She is hoping to get her GED and be cast in High School Musical 4.
